GEES Vision for the Future

With new Eye Clinic buildings in Gondar and an output of recognised Nurse Cataract Surgeons, GEES was approached by the the Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF) to advise on developing Debark.

A Concept Brief was written by GEES which was accepted. This outlines two collaborations:

    • With the Regional Health Department in Bahir Dar to develop a secondary eye unit in Debark. This will serve Adi Arkay, Dabat, Jana Mora and Deresgie Health Centres which will also need ophthalmic equipment. This is a 1.25 million catchment of people who previously have had no local established eye services. There is a newly built hospital here positioned to serve the Simien Mountain area. It has underused out patients and a spare operating theatre.

This is a very exciting development.

    • With the University to provide equipment in the new building, especially a library and resource centre, and liaison for students to get more ophthalmic teaching.

At the present time FHF and Light for the World are discussing a management collaboration.

GEES is developing a Rotary partnership with Saverne, Offenbach, Abergavenny and Gondar to participate in financing both these collaborations.   A vehicle is needed to link the Health Centres to Debark

GEES will continue to support short term overseas volunteers who take part in teaching.

GEES will continue to look for opportunities to develop further secondary Eye Units in under-served areas of Amhara, such as Lalibella and Metemma.

There is a School for Blind Children outside Gondar which seeks support.   Many of their children come from Debark in the Simien Mountains.

We need funds for all these developments.
